BUS 5669 Mastering Project Management

Course Description

Covers generally accepted project management practices on a broad range of projects such as construction, software, engineering and automotive. Emphasizes the process-based approach to accomplishing work activities comprising of inputs, tools and technologies and outputs.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

  • List and define the project management body of knowledge concepts
  • Illustrate how different activities relate to the five process groups of Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Monitoring, and Closing
  • Describe the nine knowledge areas of project management consisting of project integration, scope, time management, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk management and procurement

Week 1

Lecture: Course Introduction

Lecture: The PMP®/CAPM® and the PMBOK® Guide – Fourth Edition

Lecture: The Project Management Framework

Outcomes

  • Understand the difference between the PMP® and the CAPM®
  • Know which path is right for you
  • Know how the PMBOK® Guide is linked to the PMP®/CAPM® exams
  • Understand what a project is
  • Know what a project manager does
  • Identify the difference between project and operations management
  • Determine what factors influence your organization
  • Identify the characteristics of a project life cycle
  • Identify who stakeholders are
  • Know what organizational factors influence project management

Week 2

Lecture: The Project Management Lifecycle

Lecture: Project Integration Management

Outcomes

  • Identify the project management process groups
  • Know the processes in project initiation, project planning, project executing, project monitoring and controlling, and project closing
  • Know what occurs in the project integration management knowledge area
  • Identify the inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs for each knowledge area process (ITTOs)
  • Know what is in a project charter
  • Know what is in a project plan
  • Understand how to direct and manage project execution, monitor and control project work, perform integrated change control, and close a project or phase
  • Use Microsoft® Office Project 2007 to create a consolidated project plan

Week 3

Lecture: Project Scope Management

  • Know how to collect requirements
  • Understand how to define scope
  • Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS)

  • Understand how to establish the budget
  • Understand how to control costs
  • Understand earned value management

  • Know how to plan procurements
  • Understand how to conduct and administer procurements

  • Understand the differences between the PMP® and the CAPM®
  • Know what to expect on the exam
  • Understand how to best study for the exam
  • Know how to take the test
