With over 30 years of experience in the IT field, Minor Rojas is no novice when it comes to process improvement.
However, as businesses demand faster, better results, Rojas felt like he needed to gain additional knowledge to stay competitive. Looking for a program where he could leverage his experience, he turned to Florida Tech’s Accelerated Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course.
“I’ve had it in the back of my mind to do this, but I wanted a course that wasn’t going to take six months to finish. I wanted to leverage what I already knew about Six Sigma and project management to accelerate my learning. Over the years, businesses demand faster project turnaround with increasing levels of quality. The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course at Florida Tech felt like the right choice for me.”
Rojas plans to use what he learned in the online certificate course in his everyday work and to promote effective process improvement practices in his organization. We spoke with him about his academic experience and future plans.

I was born in Costa Rica and migrated to the United States when I was six years old. I became a U.S. citizen when I became an adult.
I have over 30 years of experience in the Information Technology (IT) field. I landed in IT when I was recruited to operate an IBM S/360 mainframe computer at the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco, and I fell in love with this business.
How will your Florida Tech certificate make a difference in your career?
Certification brings with it acknowledgment by peers that a person is capable and knowledgeable about delivering products and services. The certificate will position me to work on projects that are of interest to me and will show value to employers.
Do you have any future plans with your certificate?
I plan to make it part of my employment portfolio and use it to promote effective practices for projects and quality improvement.
What surprised you most about the online certificate course?
The course has backing from highly experienced educators and Black Belts. The Master Black Belt and author of the required text has a strong connection with this course. This helped gain confidence that I was learning from reputable educators.
What was your most valuable takeaway from the certificate course?
The course helped me re-affirm that this is just the beginning of another step in my career. The learning never ends, and true mastery of any discipline requires continual learning and improvement. There is no finish line.
What advice would you give other students who are considering enrolling in a certificate course?
The course moves along quickly. Stay on target with a schedule and do follow-up research.
Who has been your support system?
My family is and has always been my support system. They motivate me to always work for a better quality of life.
What was the most challenging part of your journey?
I had to travel unexpectedly for several weeks. I got a bit behind, but was able to catch up when I returned.
Who or what inspires you to succeed?
I don’t want to look back on my life to regret that I didn’t finish doing what I wanted to do. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. I just found the right time to do it, so I went for it.
What is one fun fact about you?
I like playing the electric bass guitar. I’m a “closet bass player” and enjoy listening and watching other bass players on YouTube. Some of my favorites? Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke and Jeff Berlin
