BUS5668 Cases in Applied Project Management

Course Descrption

Covers planning and managing a project from initiation and execution to closeout, using learned project management concepts. Provides hands-on experience in planning and managing through a student project. Gives insight through case studies and real-world analyses. (Requirement: Must be enrolled in University Alliance.)

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

  • Examine the meaning of a project management methodology, and the importance of establishing a formal process by which to perform project management
  • Examine the Project Management Institute’s standard, called Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (or OPM3 for short), and discuss the tools associated with OPM3
  • Utilize key practices to successfully initiate projects
  • Define integrated master plan and an integrated master schedule
  • Use a work breakdown structure (WBS) to plan the management of your project
  • Identify the basics on earned value management (EVM)
  • Discuss why risk should not be considered a four letter word and the importance of identifying risk throughout your projects
  • Discuss the significance of establishing a formal process to close out projects

Lecture: Course Introduction

Lecture: Project Management Methodology

Outcomes

  • Describe project management methodology and the importance of establishing a formal process by which to perform Project Management
  • Use Microsoft Project 2007: sorting, grouping and filtering

Week 2

Lecture: Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)

Outcomes

  • Explain the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)
  • Discuss the tools associated with OPM3
  • Use Microsoft Project 2007 to integrate Microsoft Project with other programs

Week 3

Lecture: Successful Project Initiation

Outcomes

  • Recognize the importance of early identification of the project manager and all stakeholders
  • Define project scope
  • Detail the establishment of a SMART set of requirements
  • Discuss defining a project’s goals and priorities prior to beginning planning
  • Use Microsoft Project 2007: Fine-Tuning Tasks

Week 4

Lecture: Introduction to IMP/IMS

Outcomes

  • Identify and use an Integrated Master Plan / Integrated Master Schedule

Week 5

Lecture: Work Breakdown Structure

Outcomes

    • Provide definitions of a WBS
    • Describe different WBS formats
    • Discuss creating a WBS as a means of tracking and controlling our project
    • Use Microsoft Project 2007: Working with Resource Pools

Week 6

Lecture: Earned Value Management

Outcomes

  • Define earned value and earned value management
  • Provide rationale why EVM is used
  • Review basic EVM metrics
  • Review a 10 step process to perform EVM
  • Show benefits of using EVM on projects
  • Use Microsoft Project 2007: Advanced Project Plan Tracking

Week 7

Lecture: Risk Identification

Outcomes

  • Discuss the importance of risk identification
  • Identify the tools available to assist in the identification of risk
  • Assign a score to each identified risk 
  • Define non-critical risks

Week 8

Lecture: Project Closeout: Providing a Solid Basis for Future Projects

Outcomes

  • Recognize the importance of performing a formal closure activity for all projects
  • Identify 4 key project metrics to perform a project evaluation
  • Evaluate the process used for managing a project
  • Perform closeout steps
    • Capture lessons learned
    • Perform team member recognition
    • Create a project final report
    • Perform a close out review
    • Archive project data
    • Customize Microsoft Project
